Many islanders choose to volunteer both their time and resources to benefit their communities, connect with others, give back and raise funds for worthwhile causes. The following is a comprehensive list of active Cayman clubs and organizations.
Grand Cayman's Tennis Club is home to tennis lovers young and old. Run by a team of certified professionals, the club offers players 6 hard courts, 3 clay courts, lessons and clinics, programmes for adults and juniors, leagues, a pro-shop, a backboard, raquet stringing and more. After getting its start in 1929, this organization has grown sizeably and achieved considerable success in recent years. Regular games and tournaments are held for members, including the annual Cayman Open and Junior Circuit Tournament. Joint and single local and overseas memberships are available and fees are due upon joining and annually.
The Cayman Islands Sailing Club is for those who truly enjoy being out on the water. Members have access to the clubhouse, which is an exciting spot to enjoy a drink and great company, and the club's proximity to North Sound offers ample sailing opportunities. Boat storage is available at reasonable prices. Social events are held throughout the year, boats are available for rent, and crafts like cruisers and J22 keelboats are often raced. Members receive a weekly newsletter and the National Sailing Centre provides a variety of lessons to adults and youth.
The Girls' Brigade is a Christian organization based in Savannah, Grand Cayman. It comprises the Explorers, Juniors, Seniors and Brigaders, who meet at the United Church hall every Wednesday at 6pm. Each unit follows a programme dedicated to developing members spiritually, physically, intellectually and in service. Activities include Bible study, drama, dance, prayer, crafts, safety, home making, health hygiene and helping the community. Members are awarded gold, silver and bronze medals upon completion of their programme and popular annual events include the All Island Girls' Brigade World Day of Prayer Service and the All Island Girls' Brigade Camp.
The Kiwanis Club of Grand Cayman is active in promoting the health and safety of children. They support five Key Clubs in island high schools and host fundraisers that are fun for the whole family, such as walk-a-thons and bike-a-thons. The donations generated go to benefit a number of charities, including Bring Up Grades, the Book Mobile and Santa's Landing. Meetings are held at the Britannia Golf Course Restaurant on the first and third Wednesday of each month.
The Bridge Club is for players of all skill levels with a true love for the game. Tuesday Night Duplicate Bridge is held weekly at the Comfort Suites ar 715pm. Friday Morning Duplicate Bridge is held at the South Sound Rugby Club and begins at 915am. Each session of play costs 5 Cayman Islands dollars per person.
The Cayman Islands Astronomical Society was founded in 1991. Having recently celebrated its 22nd anniversary, the CIAS is the place to go for all things astronomy. Members of this club are granted exclusive access to related events and facilities in the islands and free meetings, which are open to the general public, are held once monthly at Pedro St. James. Meetings are typically cancelled at 50 percent cloud cover and greater. The CIAS supports the University College of the Cayman Islands' William Hrudy Observatory and promotes astronomy in education through free school visits.
The Bookends Club is for all of the literature fans in Grand Cayman. They gather at 7pm on the second Wednesday of each month to discuss the club's current book selection, which can be anything from a classic or contemporary fiction novel to a work of non-fiction. Meetings are typically held at Books & Books, a popular island store, and new members are always welcome.
The Cayman Drama Society was founded in the early 1970s to promote drama, music and the arts. Operating out of the Prospect Playhouse, the society hosts a minimum of 5 high-quality live theatre performances every year for the purpose of educating and enriching the lives of islanders. Past productions include Godspell, Rumors, Little Shop of Horrors, Cocktails and Cabaret and many more. Members have access to the CDS newsletter, club nights, improv, workshops, play readings and activities run 12 months a year. Applying for membership is simple and requires filling out and submitting a basic form. The Cayman Drama Society is supported by individual and corporate patrons.
The Cayman Islands Photography Club is open to passionate photographers of all skill levels, from novice to professional. In addition to having an active Flickr account, which serves as an online hub for members to share their work and thoughts, they meet twice bi-monthly. The first meeting, which is held at Leeward 3, is on the first Thursday of the month and the second meeting, which is on the third Sunday of the month, is an outing organized for members to shoot a specific subject.
Grand Cayman's Garden Club was established in 1957 to promote hobby gardening and the beauty of the natural world. Membership is open to everyone and the club's theme is "Keep Cayman Clean and Beautiful." The Garden Club hosts monthly meetings from September to June and undertakes a wide variety of projects, from the Flower Show to landscaping at a number of schools, parks and other buildings. The club is known for their public planting and community service initiatives, including beautifying the National Museum and assisting both the National Trust and National Cultural Foundation.
The International Ladies' Club is an organization for island women of any nationality who are 18 years of age and older. This club provides women with the opportunity to socialize and develop friendships in a friendly environment. Many social events are held by the ILC throughout the year that appeal to women of many age groups.
Grand Cayman's Orchid Society teaches members how to grow and take care of a wide variety or orchids, from native to exotic. The club meets on the second Saturday of each month and members also promote conservation, propagation and the rescuing of endangered orchid species. The Orchid Society hosts an annual Orchid Show and sale at the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park in Grand Cayman that is attended by many Caymanians.
The Cayman Islands Model Flying Association promotes safety and responsibility in model aviation. They strive to educate members of all ages and encourage junior membership among those aged 18 and under. CIMFA members gather to fly their crafts most weekends and spectators are always welcome. The association's flying site is located in Newlands, Savannah and safety is monitored consistently during all excursions by a safety officer. The CIMFA hopes to one day implement and operate a “Pilot Achievement Scheme” and host workshops on topics such as radio installation and airframe construction. Those who wish to join must first attend the flying site in order to meet current members and the committee. An application for membership is then reviewed at the next committee meeting.
The Cayman branch of the International Wine and Food Society was established in 1987. Though each branch maintains distinct traditions, main goals of this organization include enjoying fine wine and meals with friends, educating members on topics relating to wine and the culinary world and meeting both winemakers and chefs. The island chapter hosts up to 8 events per year, which range from wine tastings to demonstrations and dinners. The IWFS Wine Company Limited, which is a non-profit company run by branch members, is home to a range of superior wine. Membership in this club is by invite only and interested islanders are encouraged to attend IWFS events in advance. Membership is usually expanded annually, in October.
Grand Cayman's Visual Arts Society was founded over 30 years ago. A non-profit organization, the VAS is dedicated to the appreciation, enhancement and learning of art. Following the destruction of the Eucalyptus Building studion in 2004, the VAS rebuilt and is now housed in the restored Watler House at Pedro's Castle, which was opened to the public in 2007. The Visual Arts Society offers workshops on many different mediums and is run entirely by volunteers.
The Grand Cayman Lions Club is a Caribbean branch of the world's largest service organization, which was founded in 1917. Known for their commitment to sight conservation, the club raises awareness, conducts vision screenings and distributes medicine. Meetings are held on the first and third Thursdays of each month at the Lions Community Centre, which is located on Crewe Road. The club boasts a number of programmes that benefit both youth and adults, including the SightFirst Programme, which fights blindness internationally, the Leo Programme and numerous Youth Development projects, including swim meets and spelling bees. The Lions Club, in partnership with the Cayman Islands Cancer Society, promotes prostate health and they also host monthly Caribbean breakfasts.
The LEO Club is a non-profit organization for islanders aged 18 to 30. This haven for youth provides members with valuable skills like teamwork and cooperation and fosters the development of friendships. Regular projects and fundraisers are undertaken to benefit the community of Grand Cayman and meetings are held the first and third Wednesday of every month at the Lions Community Centre. There is an annual membership fee and a per-meeting fee of no more than 5 Cayman Islands dollars.
