Whether you're a novice or experienced golfer, the Cayman Islands offer some of the most ambitious, demanding courses in the world. Locals and tourists can easily enjoy an afternoon round as a family or a quick 9-holes with a business associate, and the weather is almost always perfect. The primary Cayman golf courses are professionally designed and offer many exciting amenities, including lessons, carts, on-site shops and club rentals. Read on to learn more about the best places to practice this sport in the islands.

 

North Sound Golf Club


 

One of only two 18-hole courses in the Cayman Islands, North Sound is the ideal destination for golfers of all skill levels. Located across from Seven Mile Beach, off of West Bay Road, the grounds are beautifully landscaped and offer wonderful ocean views, silver thatch and palm trees. It is common for players to find themselves in the company of tropical birds and lizards enjoying the heat of the sun. Formerly called The Links at Safehaven, North Sound offers an open layout and exciting, challenging game play.

 

The course was designed by Roy Case, who is renowned for creating golf courses, such as Carenage Bay and the New Jersey National, that maintain the environmental and topographic integrity of the land. Semi-private, both members and non-members are permitted to play here. North Sound boasts nearly 200 members and is managed by Jason Deerwester, a member of the Professional Golf Association. The club's pro shop is fully stocked and offers golf equipment, apparel, balls, footwear, hats and kids' clubs, and brands include Adidas, Nike and Callaway. Rental clubs are also available.

 

The North Sound Golf Course accepts reservations and tee times are available between 730am and 6pm. Fees for rounds vary; resident adult rates are $130.00 for 18 holes and $80.00 for 9 holes, while non-resident adult rates are $175.00 for 18 holes and $110.00 for 9 holes. Membership types include resident, gold, corporate and seasonal and fees range from $1,650.00 for 6 months to $10,000.00 for up to four corporate members. Memberships come with benefits like cart fee packages, a 10% pro shop discount, free bag storage, discounted range balls and early twilight starts.

 

 

Brittania Golf Club


 

An incredibly unique course, the Brittania Golf Club is located at the Grand Cayman Beach Suites in Seven Mile Beach. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, the classic “links” layout offers a rich, rewarding experience for skilled and inexperienced players.This course utilizes natural challenges such as dunes, mounds and lakes, and each hole presents something new.

 

The Brittania Golf Club offers both 9 and 18 holes, and two different sets of tees are available for the latter. Rates vary by season and for guests and non-guests of the Beach Suites. Between May and October, guests pay $70.00 for 9 holes and $115.00 for 18 holes, while non-guests pay $75.00 for 9 holes and $100.00 for 18 holes. Between November and April, rates rise to $90.00 and $100.00 for 9 holes and $140.00 and $150.00 for 18 holes. The twilight rate is $50.00 and packages are available. Shoes with steel spikes are prohibited on the green, and professional attire is required, including collared shirts for men.

 

Club members and guests who wish to improve their play can take private or group lessons with Britannia's talented instructors. Private lessons are taken with Marcello Santi, a former European PGA Tour Professional. Fees range from $400 Cayman Islands dollars for a 9-hole private lesson to $1400 Cayman Islands dollars for a 4-hour group lesson for 4 individuals. Individual, family and corporate memberships are available and each requires initiation fees and annual dues, which range from $2000.00 to $5000.00. Tee times are available from 8am to 530pm Monday through Friday, and from 7am to 530pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

 

The Britannia Golf Club's pro shop provides an array of brand-name attire, headwear, golf balls, accessories, gifts and novelty items. The on-site Britannia Restaurant and Bar gives hungry golfers the fuel they need to play their best, such as delicious sandwiches, salads and Caribbean classics. Open 7 days a week from 7am to 7pm, it overlooks the 18th hole of the course and also features a big-screen television and game table.

 

 

Blue Tip


 

The Blue Tip golf course is located at The Ritz Carlton in Grand Cayman's Seven Mile Beach. Designed by Greg Norman, this 9-hole green is open exclusively to residence owners and guests at this prestigious island hotel. An exciting opportunity for anyone interested in golf, Blue Tip boasts 5 long Par Fours and, while the first 8 holes are on the water, the final is on an island green. Ideal for those who enjoy slow, casual play, and those who want to play several rounds in an afternoon, this course is never boring.

 

Blue Tip offers a full-service pro shop, both electric and premium push carts and brand-name rental equipment for right and left-handed men, women and children. Seasoned players and budding professionals can take advantage of their tournament conditioning and personalized instruction. Golfers aged 15 and younger can play for free with a paying adult at designated tee times after 3pm, and instruction is free for children accompanying adults in lessons and short games.

 

 

Sunrise Family Golf Centre

 

The Sunrise Family Golf Centre is located at Sunrise Landing, a community of waterfront condominiums and residential lots in North Sound, Grand Cayman. A 9-hole, par three course with holes that range from 57 to 150 yards, it presents a challenge to even skilled golfers, and the putting and chipping green is ideal for practicing. The centre also offers Cayman's only land-based driving range; full-sized, it is complete with target greens and yardage markers. Guests can purchase brand-name equipment and apparel from the pro shop, and even get their current equipment repaired.

 

This Cayman golf course boasts a Learning Centre that is run by Robert Cummings, a PGA Golf Professional, and Kerry Maher, a CPGA Golf Professional. They offer private lessons at rates that range from $31.25 for 30 minutes to $68.75 for 60 minutes and group lessons are also available. Students learn from the best and are able to utilize tools such as video analysis to strengthen their gameplay.

 

The Sunrise Family Golf Centre's weekly specials keep golfers coming back for more. Seniors play for $12.50 on Mondays, all customers get 10% off on Wednesdays and Thursdays are Ladies Day, with women receiving a 30-minute lesson, golf and range balls and a pull cart, drink and green fee for $31.25. Fridays are fun for golfers of all ages, with all adult and junior pairs paying only $25.00 for a round and 6 golf balls. The green fee for adult visitors and residents is $21.00 and $18.75 respectively, and $10.00 for players under 18. Large and small buckets of golf balls cost $8.75 and $6.25.
